The Manor House

Going back in time is always interesting. When you have the opportunity to work on one of the most successful TV period series, it is even more appealing. We were lucky to be able to work on Czech Television’s second season of the series The Manor House. Have a look at what postproduction for such a project entails.



We did the complete visual postproduction from data processing to final mastering. This means that on every day of shooting, we receive a huge amount of raw data, which we then prepare for editing. This involves syncing the audio and video and converting it to a suitable format for offline editing. Offline editing, executed by the editor and director, is a major part of the storytelling process. Once the final cut is approved, we can continue with the next stages of postproduction.

We prepare everything for the VFX process. We retouch the materials, removing any inconsistencies  which can arise during  shooting, such as era-sensitive elements or scene changes from day to night etc. We try to help as much as possible to achieve the initial artistic vision of the film. At the same time, we prepare the raw data for color grading and also sound postproduction.

Once we have the VFX, we complete all of the data and start working on the final grading. Colour grading encompasses both colour correction and the generation of artistic colour effects. The colourist and DOP enhance the photography to create the final feel.

The next phase is online editing, where the graded image is put together with the final sound. Other elements such as graphics and credits are added.

And lastly, we prepare the master, which is delivered to the broadcaster in the specified format. The broadcaster then converts it to a transport stream which is what viewers actually see on their TVs.

The process as such is quite technologically demanding. There is a huge amount of data at stake. The First Republic had one hundred shooting days – each day means roughly 300 GB of video data. There were three editing rooms in operation at the same time. All of this requires  precise management and skilled people who know exactly what to do and when to do it.

I am really glad that our team has all of the necessary skills and that we, once again, delivered a great piece of work for people to enjoy at home. After all, it’s one of the reasons why we do what we do.
